Ammonia-water freezing as a mechanism for recent cryovolcanism on Pluto

چکیده

Abstract NASA's New Horizons flyby of the Pluto-Charon system in 2015 exposed a multitude geologically active terrains on surface Pluto. Possible evidence cryovolcanism has been reported association with crustal scale extensional tectonic structures at Virgil Fossae and two large circular mountains, informally referred to as Wright Mons Piccard Mons. Our detailed geologic mapping surrounding region reveals additional mounds overlying main edifice narrow ravines emanating from summit, possibly produced by liquid flow. We model overpressure generated during freezing mixed ammonia-water inside an enclosed chamber Pluto's ice crust global subsurface ocean. consider scenarios spanning possible range ammonia abundance conclude that stresses due freezing-induced pressurization can exceed tensile strength create fractures for escape. results suggest ocean are both viable mechanisms Pluto may explain morphological variety cryovolcanic formations observed Horizons.

Cryovolcanism and the Recent Flow of Liquid Water on Mars

The surface of Mars is too cold and dry to permit stable liquid water, yet fresh, apparently water-carved gullies and seepage features have been identified in high-resolution imaging of canyon and crater walls by the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. Here, a model of nonequilibrium hydrological activity and liquid water cryovolcanism explains the paradoxical appearance and observed properties of...

A Mechanism for Recent Production of Liquid Water on Mars

Introduction: Though Mars is a cold, dry planet, with respect to the thermal stability of liquid water at low altitudes it is not terribly different from comparably cold places on Earth [1]. In dry air such water would evaporate faster on Mars, at a rate comparable to a 60°C hot spring on Earth, but the heat loss associated with that evaporation would be mitigated by the poor thermal convection...

Cryovolcanism on Ceres.

Volcanic edifices are abundant on rocky bodies of the inner solar system. In the cold outer solar system, volcanism can occur on solid bodies with a water-ice shell, but derived cryovolcanic constructs have proved elusive. We report the discovery, using Dawn Framing Camera images, of a landform on dwarf planet Ceres that we argue represents a viscous cryovolcanic dome. Parent material of the cr...

Simple Equations for Predicting Entropy of Ammonia-Water Mixture

This work presents a set of three simple and explicit equations as a function of temperature, pressure, and mass fraction for calculation of the entropy of the ammonia-water mixture in saturated and super heated conditions. They are intended for use in the optimization and second law efficiency of absorption processes. The equations are constructed by the least square method for curve fitting u...

Sublimation as a landform-shaping process on Pluto

Fields of pits, both large and small, in Tombaugh Regio (Sputnik Planitia, and the Pitted Uplands to the east), and along the scarp of Piri Rupes, are examples of landscapes on Pluto where we conclude that sublimation drives their formation and evolution. Our heuristic modeling closely mimics the form, spacing, and arrangement of a variety of Tombaugh Regio’s pits. Pluto’s sublimation modified ...
